Mobile Computers for Hazardous Environments
What does ATEX mean for you?
Until 1 July 2003, there was no obligation on businesses or employers to assess work places as potentially explosive environments, such as those found in oil refineries, chemical plants, flour mills and many other industrial sites where flammable gases, vapours, liquids or explosive dust clouds, may be present. To meet the requirements of the ATEX regulations, which are now European law, all electric and electronic equipment must be certified for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Using electrical equipment in these areas can spark explosions, which is why, for example, you need to switch your mobile phone off when refuelling your car.
All equipment used in hazardous areas must now carry the EX mark certifying that it meets the safety standards of the European Directive ATEX 95/137.
ATEX Certified Hand-held computers
Symbol MC9090 and Intermec CK32 I Safe
These devices are hand-held computers with barcode scanners that are fully approved as intrinsically safe (I Safe) for use in these environments. They are certified to ATEX requirements for use in hazardous Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas where explosive atmospheres are likely to occur in normal operation. In addition they are sealed to at least IP67 standard (waterproof and dust proof). Symbols MC9090 and Intermec's CK32 I Safe are both available in a range of options to suit most requirements, and with a full range of accessories.
The MC 9090ex-G Mobile Computer version with a pistol grip is a compact unit for safe barcode scanning in hazardous areas. The scan trigger is conveniently positioned at the pistol grip. Thus barcodes can be captured with only one hand. Standard versions are available for palm held operation. The integrated radio module enables real time data access to your host system if required or they can be used in batch mode.
The MC 9090ex-G combines the strength of Microsoft‘s Pocket PC platform with the power of the Intel® XScaleTM PXA270 processor with 624 MHz.
A further highlight is the large easy-to-read 1/4 VGA color display with touchscreen technology.
The MC 9090ex-G is installed with the IEEE 802.11a/b/g radio standard.
Intermec CK32 IS
The Intermec CK32 Intrinsically Safe (CK32IS) mobile computer carries the most extensive list of global hazardous environmental ratings of any rugged mobile computer in the world – UL (Underwriter's Laboratory), ATEX (European Atmospheres Explosibles Directives) and IECEx (International Electrotechnical Commission) – making it the safest choice for workers in the chemical, oil and gas, and pharmaceutical industries.
The CK32IS meets or exceeds the most stringent requirements, not only for gases, vapors and liquids, but also for dusts, fibers and even, in certain regions, underground mining applications.
- The CK32 comes with 42 key and 56 key pad, VT/ANSI, 3270/5250 Overlay Configurations
