GS1 is the international body that issues numbers to identify all companies who use EAN/UPC symbols in retail, healthcare and related sectors. They used to be called the ANA or Article Number Association, but changed to GS1a few years ago. GS1 ensures no EAN or UPC barcode numbers are duplicated. They work on a subscription basis. Each year you need to pay a few hundred pounds to continue to use EAN 13, EAN8 and EAN 128 barcodes. www.gs1uk.org
